Hope For Return - 3rd October

Newbury are hoping that defender Jason Pearce may turn about and opt to make a return move after switching to FTL Futbol Hellenic League Division One East rivals Milton United last week.

Newbury chairman Keith Moss said that Peters had hinted at a rapid return, although nothing can happen for 28 days. Two other players followed Peters out of the Faraday Road door last week with skipper Darren Jones returning to Zamaretto League Andover and Paul Thomas moving down the road to Kintbury Rangers.

“We waived the seven day approach for Paul Thomas for Kintbury,” said Moss, “and I can’t blame Darren for wanting to play at a higher level of football. But it gives us more chance to look at the youngsters in the reserves and hopefully we are looking to bring in a few new players as well.”

Newbury remain stretched today when they go to Didcot Town Reserves without goalkeeper Richard Stewart and defender Craig Pearce while Lee Vincent is out with a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, back in the fold at Newbury are former management duo Darren Angell and David Ingram, who have agreed to assist with training.

Hopes For Key Players - 25th September

Newbury remain hopeful of retaining key players, despite two being the subjects of approaches.

Local rivals Kintbury are in the process of approaching striker Paul Thomas, and Milton United are seeking to attain the services of defender Jason Peters.

With regard to Peters, Newbury Chairman and first team manager, Keith Moss said: “He has told me last weekend that he is staying, I told him that I want him to stay and we cannot keep losing good players.”

Newbury entertain Division One West Letcombe in the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup tomorrow.

Newbury became the second FTL Futbol Hellenic League club to part company with their manager a week into the season.

Keith Moss, Newbury FC Chairman, who play in Division One East, accepted yesterday the resignation of First Team Manager Steve Melledew (pictured).

Melledew was appointed as joint-manager last November alongside Andy Leader and he helped guide the club to an impressive third place in Division One East in 2008/09.

However, virtually all of that squad departed in the close season with several joining Leader at Zamaretto League Division One South & West side Andover and Melledew was forced into a summer re-building job.

But he decided that it was time to go after Tuesday night’s defeat against Penn & Tylers Green that made it three successive defeats at the start of the season.

Melledew said: “I found it difficult this season and results did not go in my favour. I was responsible for the results and I did not get it right in terms of team selection. I think there is a very bright future at the football club, but I was just not enjoying it. I am very disappointed, but I take responsibility for team selection, I spoke amicably with the chairman and that was it.”

The club have placed on record its thanks to Melledew and his team for the professional manner in which they took the club forward on and off the pitch and have wished them well for the future.

Further information regarding a new appointment will be released when appropriate.
