Colwell Anger At Nomads Axe - 10th August

Duncan Colwell has hit out at Oxford City Nomads’ committee after he was axed as a joint manager, just a week before the start of the new season.

Colwell and joint manager Matty Hunt, who is also leaving the club, masterminded Nomads’ promotion to the Premier Division of the FTL Futbol Hellenic League. The duo have now been replaced by former Oxford City player Mark Jones.

Whilst the directors of Nomads thanked Colwell and Hunt for their work over the last few seasons, Colwell said he has been left stunned by his sacking. He said: “I’m still in shock at the decision to dump me. I’ve been given conflicting reasons for my sacking. The manner in which this has been done has left me disgusted. I have given ten years service to the club in which my teams have won various leagues, county and league cups, culminating with promotion from Division 1 West in my first season of management at that level. I question the timing of the decision as we are one week away from the start of the season."

he added. “Along with Matty, we had recruited and signed several new players, prepared pre-season training and friendly matches. I am proud of what the players achieved last season, and wish them all good luck in the future, but I do feel that ten years of 100 per-cent time and effort with lots of success has ended with a stab in the back.”

A statement from Oxford City Nomads said: “Mark Jones is a full-time football coach and brings extremely high qualifications to the club. He holds a UEFA B licence and is an FA Level 2 coaching tutor. He will have a player-manager role and will link with the newly-formed Oxford Football Partnership involving Oxford & Cherwell Valley College.”

Nomads’ first Premier Division match takes place next Wednesday when Marlow United visit Court Place Farm.

Oxford City managing director Colin Taylor said: "Clearly this is not a decision that the club have taken lightly, particularly at this stage of the season. “The timing of the change in management reflected recent adverse comments by key Nomads players and the fact that his three-match ban imposed by the FA for disciplinary reasons commences at the end of the month and would have been much more disruptive at that time. We had hoped joint manager Matty Hunt would continue in the role as we value his experience and commitment and he has been a magnificent ambassador for the club over the years. Regrettably however he has decided to step down. While we respect his decision we will miss him greatly.”

City Nomads Announce Managment Changes - 4th August

Oxford City Nomads have appointed a new manager to emphasise the club’s focus on the development of young local players. Ex Oxford City favourite Mark Jones who has played over 150 games for the City first team has been brought into the key role for the newly promoted FTL Futbol Hellenic League Premier Division club.

Mark is a full time football coach and brings extremely high coaching qualifications to the club – he holds a UEFA B Licence and is an FA Level 2 Coaching Tutor. Aged 30, Mark will have a player manager role and will link with the newly formed Oxford Football Partnership involving Oxford & Cherwell Valley College, Premier Sports Group and Oxford City Football Club to attract young skilful players through the Nomads structure and on to higher levels of football. The directors have thanked Duncan Colwell and Matty Hunt for their hard work and enthusiasm and wish them well for the future. Mark Jones will take immediate responsibility for the Nomads side commencing with a pre-season friendly at Bicester Town this evening (7.30pm). Oxford City Nomads’ first ever Hellenic Premier Division season starts on Wednesday 12th August when Marlow United visit Court Place Farm Stadium (7.45pm).

Oxfordshire Football Partnership - 1st June

A major opportunity for local youngsters to plan their future and develop their sports related career has emerged with this major new project launched by three experienced and respected partners.

This unique partnership brings together the experience and strengths of the already hugely successful Oxford & Cherwell Valley College, Premier Sports Group and Oxford City Football Club to provide the perfect platform for learning. Within a full time education programme, carefully designed courses will offer the broadest choices and also focus on the basics of running a football club and the community involvement of each of the partners – providing important social awareness and experience for students.

Oxford & Cherwell Valley College have an established infrastructure and first class tutors with over a decade of experience in full time football education achieving outstanding results and many players progressing onto University as well as professional football clubs. Current Oxford City players Andy Ballard, who played Conference football for Eastbourne, and Steve Davis came through the club youth structure supplemented by the full time college course as did ex-City star Garath McCleary who is now under contract at Nottingham Forest.

The formal linking of the Oxford City youth structure and the full time education programme is a natural progression for the club who can also boast strong charity and school links within its structure of over 30 teams across all age groups including veterans and Oxford City Casuals, its learning disability section. The club were voted national Community Club of the Year in 2008 and have the strongest girls and women’s structure in Oxfordshire having won the county cup five times in the last six years and currently play at Step 3 in the national women’s football pyramid. Not surprisingly, a key focus of the new initiative will be specifically designed courses for women and participation and coaching opportunities within the strong football club structure.

City first team manager Justin Merritt is managing director of Premier Sports Group who have an excellent reputation in delivering innovative and tailored education courses on behalf of schools and colleges throughout Oxfordshire. The combined internal tutorial strength of the partner organisations makes the flexibility and educational quality of the course opportunities second to none – the integration of the students into the structure and environment of the football club will add a unique social dimension to their personal development.

Within their full time courses, students are able to undertake:
• FA Coaching Certificates Level 1 & 2
• First Aid for Sport Levels 2 & 3 Injuries
• FA Coach Education courses
• Basic Referees qualifications
• CSLA Award

For those choosing to extend their education to degree based courses there are also links in place to Bucks New University based in High Wycombe with established pathways onto their Sports Management Courses and Foundation Degrees. At all stages of the career development of the students the focus is on flexible choice together with relevant and appropriate experience.

The students, aged from 16 to 19 will represent Oxford City in the midweek college leagues including the FA Youth Conference League against opponents such as Birmingham City, Wycombe and Barnet. This progressive club recently received approval to lease land alongside the stadium at Court Place Farm to develop an all-weather, floodlit full size artificial grass pitch together with 6 netball courts. Funding support is available from the Football Foundation and when planning criteria are satisfied this will provide the Oxford community with much needed state of the art training facilities.
