All Change at Hooky - 19th April
Chairman, Secretary and 'odd job man' Mike Barlow has informed the club committee of Hook Norton FC of his decision to step down from all his roles within the club at the end of the current season.
Mike said "I have been in post for 10 years, and it is time for someone younger, fresher and with new ideas to step into the role. It has been an exciting period, starting with promotion into the Hellenic, achieving, not without considerable difficulty, step 5 facilities, and seeing many exciting highs and some gut-wrenching lows during that period. It has been an honour to have held this post, and while I do not intend to hold any official role in the future, I will still be around, and it will give me great pleasure to pay my £5 on the gate like an ordinary citizen. Garnet Thomas who was secretary a couple of years ago, will be taking over in Mikes place.
Hooky Activity - 17th January
In the absence of any league games until 29th January, the Hook Norton has been playing friendlies to fill the gap.
The first of these was last Tuesday night when we paid a visit to Banbury Utd. Such contests should always go to the senior club by a large margin, especially given that BUFC are three steps higher up the system, but not this time. The Hooky boys played out of their skins and deserved to come away with 1-0 win, which should have been 2-0 if they had managed to put away the penalty they were awarded in the first half. As a nameless BUFC supporter said after the game "if you had not known the teams, you would have said that the boys in blue were in the Zamaretto Premier and not the boys in red".
Last Saturday was the 11th anniversary of the death on the pitch of Ian Willoughby, an occasion that all connected with Hooky FC (and especially those, like the writer, who were there at the time) remember with great sadness. Dickie Knight who was playing on that day organised a commemorative match against today`s 1st team which was played on the back pitch. Dickie`s team consisted largely of players who played on that fateful day, who, while older and less fit than they used to be but making up for lack of agility with guile and cunning, gave no quarter against the youngsters in the 1st team. In an entertaining game, played in the presence of Ian`s partner Kaye and their daughter, youth overcame age eventually producing a 2-1scoreline. Afterwards both teams repaired to the clubhouse for much needed refreshments, and a raffle was held for the benefit of Kaye and her daughter.
At the same time, the 2nd team visited Clanfield, and scored a resounding 4-2 win, with Josh Ibbotson putting 2 past the opposition, and Conor Devereux and Harry Smith 1 apiece.
A friendly against Broughton and North Newington is planned for Tuesday night (KO 7.45), playing surface of the main pitch permitting.
Banjo Joins Hooky' Band - 5th January 2011
Before the weather brought everything to a halt, the Hooky' 1st team was showing signs of turning around its poor performance in the first part of the season by drawing with (and nearly beating) league leaders Headington Amateurs, and then convincingly beating Trowbridge Town at home. Since then the club has been a hive of activity. Harry 'Banjo' Malcolm, with his wealth of experience at this level of football, has joined the club, and has brought with him a number of players who, hopefully, will provide Hooky with strength in depth, and will boost Hookys' ability to deliver on the pitch.
Banjo (pictured) said "After a few meetings with Chairman Mike Barlow, manager Mark Boyland and his assistant Steve Prentice and other members of the committee, I was impressed with their professional approach and the strategies in place to ensure that Hook Norton FC develops both on and off the field. The club plans to further their community engagement gave me the enthusiasm and motivation to want to be a part of the future success that we, as a management team, will develop over the coming years".
Chairman, Mike Barlow, said "We are delighted to welcome Banjo to our club. He has real knowledge both at managerial and playing levels as well as the enthusiasm and commitment we need to enable us to progress. I know that he will work well with Mark Boyland and Steve Prentice, and most importantly with the managers of the 2nd team, the under 18s and the under 16s, who, and whose players are such an important part of our future as a club".
Hooky Leads The Charter Way - 19th August
The Oxfordshire Football Association has announced that Hook Norton Football Club is their Charter Standard Club winner for 2010.
Mike Barlow, chairman of senior football at Hook Norton, said: “We are very proud of our Charter Standard Club status. We set out some years ago to build a complete club, and to bring young players up through the age groups that make up our football pyramid. This is now beginning to bear fruit with young players from our youth system featuring in senior football this year. The club has now filled every age group from adults down to minis."
"In addition, the OFA Charter Standard Volunteer of the Year 2010 goes to former secretary, Geoff ‘Jesse’ James, a richly deserved award for all the effort and hard work he has put over the years of his hands on involvement at Hooky.”
