Promotion Not Applied For - 1st January 2011

Premier Division Slimbridge have decided not to apply for promotion to the Zamaretto League this season.

The Swans are currently second in the table, five points behind league leaders Ardley United with a game in hand, but currently do not pay any wages and chairman Keith Sparrow feels the club are not ready to make the step up.

Slimbridge want to avoid a repeat of the 2006/07 season, when they won the Hellenic title only to resign from the Southern League just weeks before the season over fears they could not operate financially at that level. That forced the club to virtually start all over again in Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division One, but they have since stormed through the leagues and find themselves in a similar position to four years ago.

Sparrow said: “Promotion is not an option at the moment. We considered it briefly but we need to get the club on a firmer footing.”

Only Slimbridge’s local rivals Shortwood United have applied for promotion from the Hellenic Premier Division, but they lie in sixth place, eight points worse off than the Swans. They are due to visit Wisloe Road for a derby clash on Bank Holiday Monday but Sparrow says the club faces a “race against time” to get the game on after the freezing temperatures caused the pipes to burst in the clubhouse for the third year in a row.

With the changing rooms and other areas flooded, club officials are currently hoping to clear the mess in time for the game. Slimbridge have not played since November 20th after a run of eight wins from nine games.

The Slimbridge v Shortwood United match on 3rd January is in doubt following a number of pipe bursts in the changing room block.

The club have engaged the local workforce in an attempt to effect repairs prior to Monday's match against their near neighbours. However with the intervening days between Christmas and New Year seeing many orgainisations literally shutting down it may be difficult to resolve matters. Further information will be provided prior to the weekend.
