Maidenhead Norfolkians' Cup Final - 5th March
The Stripes bar was supped dry as a bumper crowd of 340 fans turned out at York Road to see Holyport Reserves retain the Norfolkians’ Cup on Friday night.
Although Port retained the antique, prestigious cup which dates back to the 1870’s it was a close run, nail biting encounter, which was only settled at the death on penalties.
Andy Sinclair and Noel Steadman’s youngsters (plus one old un!) started in fine form, with Emlyn Hill going close in the first minute, before Lee Barney opened the scoring on 8 minutes. Burnham had to do something fast to stop an early onslaught and responded just 3 minutes later when Dan Quarterman equalised after Port failed to clear their lines. The goal totally changed the course of the game and United now took control causing all sorts of problems to an unsettled Holyport defence. It was hardly surprising when the impressive Jason Marney, fired an unstoppable shot past Aaron O’Brien to give them the lead on 25 minutes which was to remain until the 87th minute, when substitute Lewis Driver equalised to relief of the Holyport supporters.
30 minutes of extra time could not separate the two sides as the match went down to the dreaded penalties. Coleman, Barney and Rapley all gave the Burnham keeper, Darrel Jones, no chance to make a name for himself, but O’Brien did just that pulling off two superb saves, and when ex Holyport player Sam Batchelor’s attempt hit the bar the Cup came back to Summerleaze Village.
47 year old Captain, Nigel Wright lifted the trophy, his first Cup Final win in over 20 various final attempts.
The match was a credit to both sides and the tradition of this long standing competition in which either side could have lifted the trophy.

Field Of Dreams For FA Vase Debut - 17th September
Many years hard work has seen FTL Futbol Hellenic One East Club Holyport realise their dream of playing in the Carlsberg FA Vase. This weekend, Saturday 20th September the ‘Port’ entertain Combined Counties League side Sandhurst Town at Summerleaze Village, the match kicks off at 3-00pm.
This is something of a fairytale for a team who played on a local park pitch just five years ago and are now using a ground that that has seen continual development all down to the hard work and dedication of a group of individuals who truly love football and this is epitomised by one of the youngest members of the group, Reserve team captain Richard Tyrell. As recently as last Saturday, 6th September, Richard arrived at the ground at 7-30am in the morning helping a group of six to lay hard more standing ready for spectators for the big match. Then watched the home game against Newbury, which was followed by a quick shower and taking the lead role in organising a fund raising ‘Race Night’ that eventually finished at midnight. Richard even took home a few of the evening’s helpers who had indulged in a few ‘sherbets’ whilst Richard stayed alcohol free.
Holyport as a club can’t wait for the big day and come what may they will enjoy their day and hope they can be one of the second Qualifying Round giant killers

| Delighted With Progress - 22nd July
Tuesday 15th and Thursday 17th saw Holyport kick off their pre-season campaign with a creditable 2-0 defeat against a strong Windsor & Eton side followed by a 5-2 demolition of Bracknell Reserves.
Manager Jason Andrews has given all of this season signings a run out and has been delighted with the effort and application from all of his squad, but especially the youngsters and new signings.
The next game however will be a stern test as Slough Town will be bringing their first team squad to Summerleaze Village along with their large, loyal travelling support for a 7-30pm kick off on Thursday (24/7). This is followed by a trip to Woking to play Combined Counties side Westfield on Saturday (26/7).
Maidenhead United then visit ‘The Port’ headquarters for a clash between Maidenhead’s top two sides, again a large attendance is expected as Drax Hippolote is expected to field a number of first teamers and new prospects.
Port’s management duo of Andrews and Tom Donati have stepped up the search for a new keeper as the impressive Warren Carter looks set to join Bracknell Town. Town manager Byron Walton has been a long time admirer of Carter failing to lure him to his previous club, Flackwell Heath last season. This time however he looks set to get his man.
Holyport will continue their popular ‘Kids under 16 Free’, entry scheme for the coming 2008-2009 season. This concession will also apply for the two, major pre-season matches against Slough Town on Thursday 24th July and Maidenhead United on Thursday 31st July. General spectator ground entry will be £3 per person. |
