FA Cup Fever Hits Clanfield - 13th August
The sleepy West Oxfordshire village of Clanfield has been hit by FA Cup fever. Tomorrow will see the local football team play their first ever FA Cup match away at Fareham Town.
One of Clanfield's oldest supporters 87 years old, Bert Cross, will be making the journey to the South Coast. Speaking to our reporter Bert said "The whole village is going barmy! I reckon half of Clanfield will be there cheering on the team. Whole families are making the trip with many making a weekend of it and staying overnight at the nearby holiday resorts of Southsea and Hayling Island. I think it's wonderful for the village - I can remember watching Clanfield play as a very young lad and many a time having to clear the cow pats off the pitch before Kick-off!"
There's sure to be a real party atmosphere at Fareham on Saturday as a local plastics manufacturer has given 250 red and white beach balls (Clanfield's colours) to the club. No doubt Clanfield are hoping that one ball may help repeat the good fortune that Middlesbrough enjoyed against Liverpool two seasons ago.
Chairman, John Osborne can rightly feel proud when his team takes to the field on Saturday. The Robins were delighted by their acceptance into this years Competition and will be one of the lowest ranked Clubs taking part. They face a daunting task.Their opponents have a history of success in Cup Competitions having reached the FA Trophy Final in 1986/87 and have on three occasions reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup.
Clanfield have a number of changes to personnel this season.Rob Coules,Eddie Everett, and Adam Little have left for pastures new whilst new arrivals includeJamie Butt,Chris Blakeley,Danny Dixon, all fromCarterton, and Dean Mays from local football having previously played for Old Woodstock Town. Dan Bishop joins Clanfield from Highworth Town and James Bowers from Cheltenham Saracens have returned after a seasons absence. The transfer of Matt Povey from Malmesbury Victoria was completed on Thursday morning and he will be able to take his place in the squad for the weekend.
The Robins have a number of doubts for Saturday though as Dan Bishop missed the midweek match with Lydney Town due to injury and Ollie Oswin,Steve Olphert,Dean Mays and Kevin Brooks all received heavy knocks and are doubtful. Clanfield will select from: Brain; Brooks; Coleman; Rodgers; Oswin; Butt; Blakely; Dixon; S Olphert; D Mays; Bishop: C Mays; Bowers; Bush; Bryant; Acock; Povey
