New Additions On Cards - 3 February 2012

Promotion chasing Newbury are hoping to strengthen their squad as the chase to rise hots up.

Manager Steve Melledew expects to have three new faces in his ranks next week in a bid to freshen up his side's Hellenic League Division One East promotion challenge.

Newbury have recently added teenager Hayden Best from Highmoor Ibis to their squad, but Melledew has three other targets in mind and expects them to add to his resources by next week.

Ugly Win Acceptable - 15 December

Steve Melledew, said he will accept an ugly win on Saturday, if it means his Newbury side top the table at Christmas.

Newbury face bottom side Didcot Town Reserves at Faraday Road on Saturday, looking to preserve their status at the top of the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division One East.

Although Newbury recently secured a 5-1 away victory against the division's basement boys, Melledew said he would be happy to take any kind of win this week. "The only result I will be looking for is a win," he said. "We want to stay where we are at Christmas and it doesn't matter to me if we win ugly. Anything after that will be a bonus."

Melledew is hoping to choose from a full strength squad for the game, although Tommy Langfrey faces a late fitness test.
Newbury enter the game in high spirits after avenging their only football league defeat of the season last weekend, winning 3-1 away at Penn and Tylers Green.

In Form Strikers - 9 December

Newbury boss steve Melledew has the choice of three in-form strikers at his disposal for the quick return with Penn and Tylers Green in Buckinghamshire tomorrow.

Darren Jones, Kalief Madden and Jeff Kalejaiye all netted goals in the midweek 5-1 win at Didcot Town Reserves and Newbury now aim to avenge their 3-2 home reverse at Penn's hands two weeks ago, their only defeat of the football league season to date.

craig adey newbury fc hellenic leagueSteve Melledew has returned to Newbury Football Club as manager, almost two years after he resigned from the position. Melledew (pictured left), who has previously had spells in charge of Thatcham Town and Winchester City, has taken over again at Faraday Road, with chairman Keith Moss assisting him alongside club coach, Craig Adey (right). Reports the Newbury Weekly News.

The former Everton striker, together with Andy Leader, guided Newbury to a third placed finish in the Hellenic League Division One East in 2008/09, but Melledew resigned just three games into the following season after successive defeats. However, he has now returned to the club and Moss is hoping he can build on a successful season for Newbury, which saw them just miss out on promotion, finishing third in the league, but winning the Reading Senior Cup on penalties against Flackwell Heath.

Moss said: “We are looking forward to having another successful season, but it would be nice to go one better and get promotion. I am sure it will work out this time and we are looking forward to getting going.” Moss added that several new faces were likely to join the squad for the coming season, although he said experienced goalkeeper Andy Bayliss had left the club to join Fleet Town, while Callum Willmoth and James Mandry have also left to join Thatcham Town. The management had been encouraged by the turnout at pre-season training last week though, with 28 players attending the first session, training is now continuing on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
