Penn & Tylers Green came away with a gritty 2:1 victory in today’s pre-season friendly against our old friends and former uhlsport Hellenic League side, Rayners Lane FC, who nowadays ply their trade in the Spartan South Midlands Football League - Division 1.
With an unusual kick off time of 11:00 a.m. (due to a number of players and coaches attending the Penn Fest later in the afternoon) the game commenced at the very impressive new Tithe Farm Social Club.
The home side, playing in their traditional yellow and green kit, had by far the better start and were unlucky not to take an early lead. It took the boys in blue & white around 20 minutes (when a short spell of rain absolutely hammered down to Earth) to settle down. It was in this period and against the run of play, that the visitors from French School Meadow took the lead after a free kick. Within minutes after that Penn & Tylers Green FC doubled the lead after a retaken penalty kick. With being two nil up the visitors took control of the game until half time and could have even extended the lead further in this spell.
After the break the home side had more possession and came close a few times, with Penn & Tylers Green FC having the occasional chance on the break. Half way through the second period the home side got a goal back after a defensive mix up, only needing a tap in by the Rayners Lane FC forward.
After the customary pre-season changes the game petered out a little bit but always stayed very competitive (with even the odd niggle here and there). The boys from the top of the Chilterns managed the game over the line with a 2:1 win. It was pleasing to “grind out” a result against a side from the same step 6 level of football.
The next game is another pre-season friendly against Thame United on Thursday, 25th July, 19:00 kick off at French School Meadow.
