Purton 3 Shrivehham 5 - 7 June
Shrivenham Football Club began their 2019-20 preseason campaign with a comfortable victory over Wiltshire Senior Leaguers Purton, at Beversbrook Sports Facility [Calne] on Saturday afternoon as both sides enjoyed a useful workout.
A mixture of First Team, Development and trialists took to the fantastic playing surface in an enjoyable fixture to set both clubs back on track as the new season approaches in their respective leagues.
Purton opened the day’s proceedings with just three minutes on the clock courtesy of a confident side-footed effort, and they doubled their lead 22-minutes later after the ball was slid in at the far post and completed the first half scoring.
Nathan Blackford got Shrivv back in to the game with a well struck penalty on 49-minutes after Antonio Gerrish was felled and Gareth Davies side drew level with a second spot kick when the impressive Tom Ballard was brought down – Blackford making no mistake from the spot for the second time in the game.
Purton managed to get themselves back in front with 20-minutes remaining with a superbly worked team goal but with just 8-minutes on the clock Gerrish, who had been causing problems for the opposition all game, levelled the scores with a cracking long rang effort to give the scoreline a happier look for Shrivvy and in less than a minute, Gerrish grabbed his second of the game to put his side ahead for the first time in the match.
With the time almost up, Ballard tried his luck and saw the ball find the bottom corner of the net and sealed an opening day win.
The side are back at practice tomorrow evening at the clubs Watchfield training facility as they continue preparations for the start of the Uhlsport Hellenic Premier season with the next exhibition game scheduled for next Saturday when the side travel back to Wiltshire where they’ll face Calne Town.
